Award winners

The Thomson Foundation announces the winners of the 'Reporting HIV/AIDS- EU-India Media Awards 2006'.

Mohuya Chaudhuri for “AIDS under the Arclights”, a programme on NDTV that made an in-depth examination of exploitation and exposure to HIV in the Chennai film industry. It encompassed a wide range of issues and made for gripping television.

Bharati Ghanashyam, for her article “Whither messaging?”, which investigated the effectiveness of health communication. The report was well written and focused on attitudes and misconceptions about HIV/AIDS in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.

Biju Mathew, from All India Radio, Trivandrum, for his entry “One Among Us” which was an evocative and hard-hitting expose of people living with HIV/AIDS being denied medical care. Good research and a strong focus were combined with effective use of the medium.

From the Dinamalar newspaper in Madurai, S Nagarathinam, who produced a special page holding the health system accountable for lack of diagnostic and treatment facilities for people living with HIV/AIDS. His campaign was focused, comprehensive, and made for compelling reading.

Sanjeev Sharma, from All India Radio, Jammu, for his radio programme “Isse Pehle ki Andhera Ho (Before Darkness Descends)” on living positively. The well-paced programme was informative and explored at the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS in rural areas.

Rajeet Ranjan Sinha for his programme “Main Jeena Chahta Hoon (I Want to Live)” on Zee News, in which he looked at the issue of provision of AIDS drugs through the eyes of one man. The programme represented speedy and effective coverage of a current issue.

The entries of the winning participants were chosen for their excellence in the reporting of HIV/AIDS issues in India and their furtherance of the best practices enumerated in the HIV/AIDS Media Manual, India.

STUDY TOUR TO THE UK FOR 2006 AWARD RECIPIENTS

The recipients of the Reporting HIV/AIDS Awards went on a study trip to the UK from December 11-15, 2006. They visited a number of organisations working on HIV/AIDS and related issues.
