It was certainly an inspiring workshop. As I took a nap in the plane while returning to my city after the Print II workshop 2006 at Delhi, suddenly the person sitting next to me woke me up. I woke up to find the air-hostess, standing near me asking for any medical assistance. They told me that I was prattling on about HIV/AIDS in my sleep. The way we were addressing PLWHA prior to the workshop was objectionable. AIDS/HIV is very much in my journalistic agenda and I will file stories related to it soon.

First of all I must confess that the workshop has given a new dimension to my thoughts. It was a great experience and whatever I learnt, I promise would reflect through my works. After returning from Print II workshop, 2006, in New Delhi, I have filed two reports on HIV/AIDS. While the first one received state coverage as it was regarding three new ART centers, the second one received national coverage and was greatly appreciated by my seniors and colleagues. It was about a woman I met at the local VCCTC who had received a letter from her missing husband four years after his departure. He confessed that he was absconding on knowing about his HIV status. The lady traced her husband’s address to Varanasi with the help of the postage stamp only to find out that it was too late.

What I loved most about the workshop was that it was just as much about Journalism as about HIV/AIDS. Post workshop, I've been working on a couple of HIV/AIDS stories, one of which will appear in the anniversary issue of our newspaper on July 14 when the Bombay edition of the Hindustan Times turns one. I wrote about an NGO that works in Mumbai's red light district helping commercial sex workers to get ration cards, set up bank accounts and educate their children. They even conduct funerals when their bodies lie unclaimed in hospital.

I haven’t attended such a fruitful workshop in my service and all credit goes to the excellent team of trainers of EU-India Media Initiative on HIV/AIDS. My ongoing project on media and HIV/AIDS reporting titled “A Mo” is going great. Recently we broadcast a new episode in that series airing the experiences of senior journalists. I could also share the experiences I gained from the workshop with them.

I am back to work with fresh vigour & many new ideas, thanks to the MIHA workshop. I am also more careful now of the words I choose, double check facts and figures and also the overall impact of the programme. We did a live phone-in on HIV/AIDS with an HIV+ person and a counsellor from VCCTC recently. This is the first time such a programme was done from our station. Thanks for all the encouragement & guidance.
