The workshops,
conducted by The Thomson Foundation
under the EU-India Media Initiative on HIV/AIDS (MIHA),
attempt to remove misconceptions about HIV/AIDS and the
stigma attached to PLWHA using a viable and practical approach.
The
candidates short-listed to participate in the workshops
are journalists who have worked with HIV/AIDS stories and
programmes in the recent past on print, radio or television.

The
workshops have classroom sessions, supported by field trips,
and dynamic group activities which lift the participants out
of their comfort zones. These informal sessions, aided by
direct interactions with people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA)
during the field trips to HIV/AIDS care homes, go a long way
in preventing victimization and evolving awareness about the
positive lives of the positive people.

The
content of the work relating to HIV/AIDS produced by the journalists
was analyzed during the workshop, keeping in mind their socio-political
backgrounds and sensibilities. Conceptualizing programme ideas,
with adequate knowledge about the policies and ground realities,
under the guidance of the project team, was actively encouraged.
This, in essence, is the prime objective of the MIHA workshops.
